Excessive Play in Transfer Case 1993 3/4 tom suburban

I have a 93 suburban that makes a clunking noice whne drviing otn the freeway. Mechanic diagnosed it as excessive pplay in transfewr case? any body have any thoughts on this and how difficult is it top repair
