Service 4 wheel drive light

Hello everyone

99 GMC K1500 Z71 extended cab 4X4

My service 4 wheel drive light comes on very randomly, sometimes a couple of times a month to once every couple of months, everything seems to be fine with the transfer case, it goes in and out of 4 wheel drive fine, I've changed the oil when it was supposed to be changed, I engage 4 wheel drive once a month to ensure the seals don't dry out etc

When I shut the truck off and restart it, the light goes out and stays out until the next time if feels like coming on

Any ideas?

If you have the 99 "new body style",

problem could be cold solder joints the dash 4 button 4x4 buttons.

Resolder/remove switch or buy a new 4 button dash switch. Cold solder/bad contact

joints on 99-00-01 4x4 dash is a known Chev/GM problem.

It could be switch itself too. Those switches seem to have a fairly good failure rate as well. Push-n-Pray it works 4x4 drive was not a very good idea to begin with in my book.

It made for fun times when the actuator would suddenly sieze and drop my Jimmy into 4x4 Hi while on the freeway.

And even more fun when it will not go into 4x4 at all or is stuck in

4lo 100 miles from home.

That - fortunately - never happened. Though the 4wd system did have it's moments. :P
