Steering gear and shaft changeout 99 k1500 into a 97 K1500

Hi, Is this even possible?? My "book' warned about turnig the steering shaft with gear disconnected, might damage SRS ??? How else could it be done??
Anyone done this? All tips and suggestions welcome. Later, MB

If you spin the wheel aimlessly with steering box disconnect4ed you can damage the clock spring.
