Truck restoration, title issue

Me and my dad are building/restoring a pickup truck. He has a title and most all of the pieces for a 73 chevy. Expectedly, the cab is rusted beyond repair. So we are building this from two different
trucks. We are using the body from an 81 he has, and everything else from the 73. There is no problems with compatibility as the body bolts to the chassis the same, just the body style is a little different.
The problem is, he does not have the title for the 81. What would be the best legal way to put these two trucks together and title for the road use.
We know simple changing the VIN plate would be illegal, and would cause suspicion because the new VIN plate used would be for the 73, and the body would look like an 81. So what should we do?
Is there any legal way we can go down to the DMV and tell them what we did, and have them do a reconstructed title?

Contact the DMY in your state. They will be able to do one of a couple things. IF your dad ever titled the truck they can issue a duplicate title. If he didn't they can issue a title in the name of the last registered owner and then you have them sign off on it.
DO NOT swap the VIN plates, that is a one way ticket to real trouble.

The states I am familar with wont issue a duplicate title to any one but the last titled owner of the vehicle. And glad I am of that, car theft is to big a problem already, lets not make it any easier on them.
Whitelightning, who was near Cooperstown last week, the week before and two weeks before that as well.

Hi!

Why don't you get a signed agreement stating that? It never hurts to have something in writing.
That said, perhaps keeping a photocopy of the '81 title along with your '73 records would be a good compromise.

Have him apply for a duplicate title and sign it over to you, then let him keep the orginal. As an incentive, tell him you will investigate whether or not you will be able to remove the original VIN plate. IIRC, you are mating two vehicles, correct (sorry haven't kept up with the thread). I'm not sure what your local/state laws dictate but you may not need the plate when you're done.

"> Hi!

mine.
first
Then just have him apply for a duplicate title. Cost is around 10-15 dollars. Have him sign it and you have a title. No problem then.

You can get a title through here: http://www.its-titles.com/ I did this with a motorcycyle that I bought. I was skeptical, but it worked out great.

depends on state you live in
in IL, you call the Sec of State, they send a guy out to verify what you have, he transfers the VIN plate and does the paper work
