2006 MDX tire issue

I have a 2006 MDX. I just ran over a sharp piece of metal that logged itself in one of my rear tires. Of course it created a flat. My question is does anyone know the parameters for using a plug (or patch)? The tire has about

3000 miles on it and other than a small gash in the center of the tread it's fine. The total length of the cut is about 3/4 to 1 inch. A new tire is about $180. If it's a safety issue I have no problem buying a new tire. However if a plug will be just as good I rather not spend the $$$.

Thanks in advance.

From the size you're talking about, a plug would probably be out of the question, but a good old-fashioned PATCH from the inside might be acceptable.

I dunno.

A good tire shop or dealership will be able to look at it and give you a better view of how safe it is to repair. From your description it sounds like an inside patch might do the trick. Center of the tread is a "good" place for a puncture to happen ... better at least than near the sidewall.

A gash 3/4 to one inch? I don't think any tire shop is going to be willing to try a repair on that. A tire with a "gash" is not "fine", it's scrap.

Ya, your safety is worth $180.
