Erm - Audi DOES have history, of sorts, with the Wankel engine!
The NSU RO80 used a Wankel, in the early 1970s.
<nerd mode on> NSU, along with Horch, DKW, Wanderer and Audi - were part of the original Auto Union, which went on to simply become Audi. <nerd mode off>
