You don't see the power steering pipes in a '80 V6. There is the canister just behind the battery and the curved cooling pipe in front of the radiator. The rest is hidden. You can check the level when the engine has not been driven for a while.

Well, a few years ago it was! However they changed the site (took me a while to find it) and changed the language into russian :(

Hidden as under the engine cover thingy or hidden as in something else? Isn't the pump at the front centre top of the engine for the power steering? The diagram at the site provided by /The Al Bundy/ seemed to show what I see is p/s.

Al,

I have the same car, and had the same problem too.

I changed the head gaskets, and in the process I pushed this pipe out of the way. The flexible section isn't all that flexible. I manged to create an internal leak in the upper flexy section (beside cyl head).

Beware - these are £180 from VAG new !!!

it has a second flexy section, running left / right behind the engine, I took it out and had the leaky bit cut out and replaced in rigid copper pipe by a radiator workshop (in Aberdeen) - worked a treat.

Bit tricky to remove, as it wriggles around behind the rack, and comes back up from behind it. Removal is about 2 hours whilst you are working out where it's going - and about 40 mins to fit back in.

Make sure you use the correct fluid - VW G2 or Citroen LHM - not traditional PS fluid !!

have fun

Yup, I know... :-,( The work is being done as I type and I'm warming up my credit card in preparedness...

Ahh, we never thought of that type of pipe...

Thanks for you help
