BMW

My sister went off to college and left me her 1993 BMW 325i. Its in good shape all around with just over 100,000 miles on it, but it has really bad acceleration. It goes 0-60 in 14+ seconds. Any tips will help, thanks.

That's such poor acceleration that something big is wrong. If the check engine light on, the computer has gone into limp mode due to a bad oxygen sensor. Also, you should have the catalytic converter checked - if it's failed/plugged it could cause this.

It's *slightly* possible that a failed VANOS actuator could cause poor power, but it's usually not bad enough to take away 1/2 your power/torque.

As the other responder has mentioned, if it seems like the auto transmission is slipping, the transmission may need servicing or replacing.

The problem is, you don't know what the problem is. You'd be wise to spend the $80-$100 for a mechanic with the diagnostic tools to figure out what the problem is, then go from there.

An O2 sensor and catalytic converter are easy; auto trannies and the VANOS actuators are jobs for specialists or very experienced home mechanics, which it doesn't sound like you are.

One VERY simple check, how dirty is the air filter? I saw a 520i do the same thing, the air filter was ancient and letting practically no air past!

definitely go for service. specialized check-up of course. a 325 should accelerate under 10secs without a doubt. my STOCK 320i e30, not e36, does it around 9secs. but manual.
