E36 insulation between exhaust & firewall

Greetings everyone,

I have a 1994 325i E36, and noticed a burning smell. Looking under the hood, I can see that there is some kind of heat or sound insulation that has come loose from the firewall and is resting against the exhaust. I has a kind of foil layer on the outside that has turned brownish in color where it contacts the exhaust. I can't see how it is supposed to be attached to the firewall. There is a second piece of the same material adjacent to it and is still in place, but I can't see where it attaches either. Does anyone know how these attach to the firewall? Were they perhaps put on with some kind of an adhesive? If so, what would be an appropriate adhesive to use to re-attach the piece. I'm assuming that it would not be wise to just remove it, but correct me if this is not the case.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Usually they're help on with screws and very often the foil cracks and they come loose. Check with

Try looking at the parts breakdown for your car in the official BMW ETK parts list. There is one online here:

Thanks for the info. That site is an excellent resource that I can use for other things, as well. It looks liike I will have to get to these from underneath, but the ramps I have are too steep, so the nose of the car hits the ramps before the tires. As soon as I can get the car in the air safely, I'll try to use a screw and fender washer to get them back in place.

Thanks again.
