E39 - rubbing noise from NS rear wheel

Any suggestions what might be causing a "rubbing noise" from the rear wheel? Tyres are not new. The noise is definitely speed-related. It doesn't alter whether brakes are applied or not (neither the hand brake). A cursory inspection doesn't show anything visible that the wheel might be rubbing against - was going to run it down to the local kiwk fit and get them to stick on a ramp but just thought I'd seek opinions/thoughts on here too.

Not 100% sure on the E39, but do you have 2 sets of brakes on the rear disks? i.e. the pads for the normal foot brakes, and shoes for the hand brake?

If so, does the noise change when the hand brake is applied?

Dodgy.

No change - handbrake or footbrake applied - am thinking possibly wheelbearings but would expect that to be a consistent rumble possibly creating resonance inside the car. Next suggestion please ;)
