Hypothetical question in the UK

I have an E39 with steptronic auto gearbox. I know with the milage on my motor this is a weak point and an expensive problem however I remember that there used to be garage type places that would change a car engine or gearbox while the owner was at work. Obviously this was with mass produced straight forward cars but are there similar places that could do the same with my car if necessary and how much would that hurt my wallet? pete

Are you thinking sameday service? Lots of auto shops can do this. Up my road a trans place does swap outs all day long (MK) if the parts are new and its no diag work and just a quick change a tranny aint changed much in years. I used to work at a Ford place and we used to swap the A4LD's all day without any trouble.

Ring local places and see what they can do:-

should help out here finding someone who can do the work. Regards,

See the garage reviews page on my site. Replacing the gearbox fluid would be cheap insurance.

They can swap the trans with another trans of the same type. They can't swap out a StepTronic and install a manual gear box. That is, they can't do such a job while you are at work. The job can be done, but it takes longer than your boss expects you to hang about.

It probably means they're fitting a transmission or engine not rebuilt by themselves. Or using secondhand ones. And there is some awful rubbish out there in the UK from the cheap 'while you wait' 'recon' places.

With an expensive item like this I'd prefer a specialist who reconditions the box and then refits it. Or just get a secondhand box from a wreck fitted - at least knowing it is what it says it is.

I have just mailed an enquiry. I understand what you are saying as I remember workshops that done nothing except change engines or gear boxes and I wondered if this happened with the BMW automatic gear boxes too and how much it would cost. Thanks. pete

Thanks John but your site has been in my 'favourites' for some time;-) I have had the gear box oil changed already. I was quoted £500 + VAT for a gearbox with 21K use but just how they prove the milage I do not know;-) pete

Oh dear. I had thought that if mine ever went I could roll into one of those gear box centres and get it replaced with a rebuilt one. I have changed my mind since reading your post. pete
