69 Camaro Engine Question

Is there any way to tell from the cowl tag or the VIN if the car originally came with a big block or a small block on a 69 Camaro?

Thanks.

The only thing that would indicate engine size are some of the X codes found on the trim tags of Norwood built Camaros, after December 1, 1968. There were seven X codes, plus also, two Z codes and a D80 code, which only indicated the inclusion of the spoiler option, and not all spoiler equipped cars had the D80 code on the trim tag. From what I know, Los Angeles/Van nuys cars didn't use the X codes on their trim tags. There was another alphanumeric code, that may have been found at the top of trim tags Los Angeles produced cars, but I don't think that these codes have been deciphered yet. I know that these codes were found on 1967 Camaros, and also, possibly 1968 cars also.

X11 - Style Trim Group, which included SS350 cars, but also included anything that had Style Trim options, including Rally Sports. A 6 cylinder car could have an X11 code on a trim tag. X22 - Style Trim Group with SS396. This code specifically indicated that the car had a 396 in it, but it didn't indicate which of the four available the car had. Also, suppossedly, some COPO 427 cars, such as the first 100 Yenkos, may have possibly had X22 codes. X33 - Style Trim Group with Special Performance Equipment (Z28). This code was specific to 302 equipped cars. X44 - Base car, but was also possibly used for some of the COPO 427 cars, inclduing the later Yenko cars. Anything from a 230 inline 6 to a LM1 350 could have a X44 code, and again, many of the COPO 427 cars may have had this code. X55 - Base car with SS350. This code specified the L48 350 engine that was available in the SS350. X66 - Base car with SS396. This also specified the 396 engine for the car, but didn't specifiy which of the four 396s that the Camaro could have that year. Also, it is possible that some of the early COPO 427 cars used this code, including the first 100 of the Yenko cars. X77 - Base car with Special Performance Equipment (Z28). This code was specific to 302 equipped cars. Z11 - This was the code for the Indy Pace Car convertible. It didn't specify an engine, but there were only 5 choices with this code, the L48 350, and the four

396 engines. Z10 - Same as the Z11, but this code was for hardtop cars. D80 - Spoiler package. Not all spoiler equipped cars had this code on the trim tag. The four 396 engines available were the L35 325 hp, the L34 350 hp, L78 375 hp, and the L89, which was an L78 375 hp motor, with L88 aluminum heads installed. Hope this was of help to you. Take care.
