Personally, I would leave the intake side alone. Stock it will flow all the air your engine can use. Put your money into a good aftermarket exhaust system.

LOL KJ, But he did say affordable. Actually, If I could justify it I would have a Gale Banks system on the Wife's Yukon. I just have a hard time spending $1,600.00 on an exhaust system.

Yea, but one of those open element kits sound mean as hell when you get on it!

I agree completely. I modded my stock airbox a number of times, plumbing up a cold air tube, a true ram air setup with a sealed airbox, and a few different configs with just added holes to the stock bottom end of the box.

The ram air added some extra pull up on the highway (felt like real nasty turbo lag), but it was a DOG around town. My mileage was horrible too.

Cold air was all right, but lost some lowend throttle responce.

Pretty much the same with the added holes. No extra power to be found there.

The stock airbox has the best of everything. Nice clean pull from just off idle, and smooth/instant power on the highway.

As far as comparing aftermarket intakes..... I haven't had a K&N FIPK, but I've seen a dyno saying it only made about 6-10hp.

I have a UPD intake lid, and that DID provide some decent gains, but it suffered a bit down low and it felt a little soft on the highway. It had decent midrange power when pulling away from a stop. Nothing REAL noticeable though. The quality wasn't really there either, and I ended up busting it when I went to remove it. It's sitting in a pile on my basement floor now. I saw a dyno of one of these, and it produced a gain of 20hp on a LQ4 6.0.

Exhausts......

I had a Corsa on my old 5.3. That was a nice system. Quiet at idle, loud when you're on the gas. Quiet inside, no resonation. Sounded a bit like a dump truck when you lugged the motor though. Quality and customer service is great.

I now have a B&B dual/split rear exit on my SS. It's RUDE. : ) I love it. It sounds angry everwhere. A lot like a "civilized" FM 40 series. No resonation, but you can definitely hear it inside. Loud at idle, loud on the throttle.

Neither exhaust really gave a whole lot of noticeable power, but the torque is there when you go to lug up a hill or something. A dyno on the B&B showed something like only 5hp, but 22ft/lbs.

The engines breathe a lot better too. I actually noticed that AFE filter I dropped in the other day.

I think the best bang-for-the buck mods would be nitrous or a Yank converter. Either will set you back $700+, but knock (at least) a half second off of 0-60mph times.
