1991 GMC Sierra remote starter issue

Hey Everyone, Hope this turns out to be a simple fix:

I have a '91 Sierra V6 with a remote starter (for these cold winters up here in Edmonton). The other morning I noticed that depressing the start button would turn on the lights as normal, but the engine wouldn't turn over. I was able to start the truck normally with key in ignition, and even depress the start button while it's running, then turn the key off and have it still stay running, as well as able to turn the engine off with the remote as well. I also saw that once it was running with the key out of the ignition, the "Check Instruments" and "Brake" idiot lights would come on and the fan/heater would turn off. Before, the heater would come on when the engine was started remotely and stay on.

I checked all fuses, everything was fine. Any ideas?

Thanks, Michael

Hi!

Check all the grounds related to your remote starter and examine all relays for proper function.

That's sound advice William, and was something that I did think of. Unfortunately, the remote starter came with the truck when I bought it, and for the life of me I cannot find the damned thing at all. I have no idea where it's installed in my truck. Any suggestions on where it could be installed, or where it should've been installed?

Thanks, Michael

Michael, I'm not sure what brand remote you have, but the most likely place to install it is under the dash, once it's wired to all the locations it needs to be.....most of these are found inside the cab......most folks simply wire-tie them up into place under the dash in amongst all the wiring. I installed mine, and as far as relays go, the only relays needed with mine were for the door locks, the starter itself did not need any, the remote itself took care of that. There is usually a switch under the hood as well so that if the hood is raised, it disables the starter. As well there is a master switch, mines in the fuse area, to turn the thing off entirely, if desired. The wire connections you're concerned with should be found in the rather large bundle of wires coming down from the steering column, stick your head under there and look for any non-factory appearing connections, mine are soldered and taped, but i"ve seen some that were simply twisted and open, and this was from folks that were paid to istall them. Good Luck, Ed
