1995 Blazer 4.3L "W" EGR Valve Gasket

...just replaced the factory egr gasket with the new gasket with the screen built into it. Now, after I run the truck just about 6 1/2 miles the "service engine soon" light comes on. Pull over turn it off and restart...light out. Drive the same amount of miles..SES light back on. Since I cleaned the EGR Valve ( very carboned up) It runs great even when the SES light comes on. Could this be a code that is in the Computer from the EGR being hung open by carbon before ? Is it possible for me to get the code out by myself ? Also, is it possible that I put the Gasket in upside down. I would almost bet money that I have it in right.....BUT there is murphy's law. I have it in with the screen over the hole BELOW the valve. Any reply would be appreciated. Thanx..RKH

If you have the gasket as you say-screen over the hole and the valve behind the open hole in the gasket, then you're fine. You'll be unable to read/retrieve the codes yourself if this is obd 2. 95 was a transition year-some had obd 1 some obd 2. If your diagnostic plug has squared off corners then you can jumper it and count flashes. If your diagnostic plug has angled corners-you can't jumper it. If you have a Auto Zone near you they can scan it for you(free)-btw-how did you know to go to the EGR valve? Also, after cleaning-kinda late now but...did you carefully push the valve all the way in and out looking for any 'binding-hangup'. Many times they'll stick when you push the valve all the way in. Other times they'll stick on the way down or up. Lastly-sometimes they don't come all the way up. I take and push em all the way down and then quickly release the valve(a snap like motion) and see if it goes all the way up-or sticks on the bottom end. Have it scanned and report back-po1406 code? If that is what you get, I would clear it out, then drive. If the code re-appears and it is po 1406-you should go back there-EGR. Also, if it comes back see if you have multiple codes-there may be something going on. Time will tell. If you have to go back to the EGR valve and remove it again I usually-making sure nothing is in the way under the hood, start up the vehicle with the EGR valve off in case any other pieces of carbon are on their way to the valve-they'll blow out instead of into your valve. Be prepared though, it'll sound like a Mack truck for the moment(10 seconds of so while you run it and rev it a few times to 2000 rpm's or so)then re-install EGR valve and clear codes. good luck

rkh-I would have it scanned again and report back here if you wish. You may not even have a problem with the EGR-you may have solved that one(problem) but may have another-murphy's law ii. If that SES lite has been on it is a clue to whats going on and again, if you get an EGR code(ie po 1406)clear it(if you haven't previously) and monitor the situation. If there is a problem, the light will be back. snipped-for-privacy@peru-motors.com
