1997 GMC Jimmy Transmission trouble

.1997 GMC Jimmy 4.3 V6. My transmission does not work properly. It stays in 3rd gear. I checked all the fuses, (that I know of) and they all look good. I checked the ones in the fuse block located inside the drivers door. I put my digital meter on each one and they are all fine. Is there another location for fuses in this vehicle? I installed a remote starter and alarm system this weekend. Could the remote start install be the problem or is it just a freak coincidence? I did a good clean job on the install. I worked at Best Buy for 3 years installing these things. I don't think that I did anything wrong. Help!

Thanks, Ben

if it starts and stays in 3rd, you've lost power to the transmission on pin 'E' of the connector

usually when that happens the speedo and tach are dead too

did it happen EXACTLY when you installed the other stuff ?

if so, start re-tracing your steps

I don't know for sure. I only drive the truck once in a while. I used it on Saturday to pull the boat in and out of the garage. That was only 10 minutes of use. It may have been broken that day. I put the starter in on Sunday then found the problem Sunday night. Is there another fuse block location that I don't know of? The truck has 216,000 miles on it. Until this problem, it hasn't had any major work done on it. Maybe the transmission has just failed.

I pulled the plug on the passanger side of the transmission. It was a circular plug with about 25 pins in it. I looked for pin E but I could see no markings on the plug. Did I pull the correct plug? How do I identify what pin is pin E? I re-traced the steps for the remote start installation. Everything looks great. The unit starts fine. Parking lights work properly. Door locks work fine. Everything involved in the installation of the remote start is awsome. I don't know what else it could be. Maybe the tranny just failed. Anything else I can do before I bring it in to get serviced? Please help

Thanks, Ben

Ahhh ok. I went over every square inch of the newly installed remote start system. Found nothing. Found round connector on tranny which is supossed to house the "E" pin which should have 12v. No writing on the plug to identify the correct pin. Plugged connector back in. Reset computer by disconnecting the positive terminal of the batt for 15 minutes. Took the truck on the freeway. The truck works great. I don't get it. I did nothing to correct the problem. Will this problem return? Should I still worry???

If it happens again activate the remote start to have it power the vehicle and see if things return to normal, the trans gets power from the white wire in the ignition switch harness. Or just check the trans fuse for 12v with the key on.

Found the problem.. The white ignition wire was the key to the solution. I found that using the remote start system to start the truck, would not apply power to the white transmission wire. At that point, the computer must go instantly into safe mode (3rd gear). Even when you turn the key to the "on" position and hit the brake, (which dis-engages the remote start system) the white wire gets the voltage, the computer still stays in safe mode. The computer must not constantly check to see if the problem is still there. If you start the car with the key, it works every time. Temporary solution to problem: Remote start vehicle to let it warm up. Turn off the car then restart before driving.

Well with that problem solved, that will bring me to the next question. WHY?????? I followed the wiring diagram to a "T". Is there another ignition or accessory wire I have to power during a remote start? If anyone can help, please let me know.

Thanks for the help Jeremy. Couldn't have done it without the tip.

I think the key to getting it right is to find out which relays are on at all times during the remote start sequence(ign on and crank) as the white(trans) and pink(pcm and engine) need power with key on and crank positions. Since the vehicle runs with the remote start you may just need to trigger the relay thats on the white wire with the same trigger as the pink, unless you are powering the blower motor circuit with the wrong relay

The white wire needs the second ignition wire from the remote start. My tech sheet says to use the pink and white as the second ignition. Tech sheet is wrong. Thanks for all the help with this.
