2000 Chevy S10 knocking problem

hey all..

wondering if anyone has some ideas what could be the problem.

backstory:

2 years ago. I took the truck to Tire Kingdom to have the oil changed and have the wheel alignment done. was told by the Tire Kingdom staff that the gear box was bad and to be replaced.

so I took it to the Chevy dealer to have that fixed and the wheel alignment done. after that was fixed, noticed that something was wrong with the way the truck was performing, it was running rough. noticed that when making a turn, the wheels lift out of place. took it back to the dealer, turns out that the mechanic left out the shims. ended up having to make 3 visits to get this fixed.

Flash forward 2 weeks ago: I noticed that the truck was running rough and was knocking intermitenly. I took it to a mechanic that we go to and found that out that a bunch of the shims had fallen out. However, He couldn't fix it as his wheel alignment machine was broken. Contacted the chevy dealer, unfortanetly, their garage were booked for a month. so I took it to Tire Kingdome to see if they could fix it. they gave it a shot, they put in new shims and added screws to them so that they won't fall out. it lasted one day. they also found that one of the wheels had bad ball bearings and was replaced. it went from bad to worse. for every dip & bump on the road, something in the engine was banging under the engine compartment. went back 3 times, each time putting the shims back in and retighten it. On this last visit, it didn't last one day. it was making noise when I got home. Took the car back to our regular mechanic, he was puzzled about this behaviour. He thought the rod (where the shims are put on) might be bad. took it back to Tire Kingdom this week and had them order the part. Just got it back today. It drove better tho. I noticed that it was running somewhat rough and knocking lightly intermittenly. it did knock a little bit harder (not as bad) when making a gradual turn

could there be something else affecting this?

Knocking, from suspension rattle, or something to do with the oil change. Running rough, ride is rough? How many miles on it? Had work done before?

it has 72,000 miles.

the ride is somewhat rough, feel vibration. I did have oil change, recently, don't see how this could affect it.

could feel/hear the knocking at the area near where the pedals are located.

it only starts knocking when the truck gets to a street that has some bumps and dips. the new replacement bolt did help somewhat. its not making continuing knocking noises on smooth roads.

took a look under the hood, appears that some shims came off and some are loose.

can shocks or drive shaft be the problem?

it looks like I might have to bring the truck back to tire kingdom. the mechanic there messed up, the horn was disconnected from the remote key lock sensor and found a disconnected hose (don't know where that goes) hanging in the wheel well on the driver side (left side)..

I would start thinking about another tire place. Does not look like there ever going to get it right. Unless your time is free. :)

yeah, I know, too many visits to that place.. I'm thinking that if they can't get that shit fixed, they probably don't know how to fix this.

Sounds like the dealer put something in backwards. After all, they left out the shims. Either backwards, or left something out. Do you have access to another 2000 S10? Take a peek your self. The shims should not fall out.

well, just found out that the head mechanic at Tire Kingdom has an s10 truck like mine, 4cyln king cab, dunno about the year, prolly 2000.. so, he should know how it should perform. He took it for a drive today and he's aware of the problem. He's not sure what could be causing the knocking.

Is his name Murphy?

Might still need another opinion. I would want one.

dunno about that. :)

If he can't fix it this one more time, yeah, I'll have to find another mech.

the TK's latest fix didn't work. I think they don't know how to fix it.

taking the truck to my regular mechanic even though his wheel alignment machine is broken..
