When your driving the noise will let up or lessen considerably when you let up on the gas, untill the engine starts to slow the vehicle down if it's a pinion bearing. They make noise when there is a load on the bearing, for that short time when you first let off the accelerator there will be no load on the bearing and it quiets. When's the last time the fluid level was checked? When's the last time the fluid was changed? Its not uncommon for the bearing areas of a diff housing to get warm. The tubes wont. also if the input seal has been replaced and the person doing it did not torque the yoke but just let it whip with an impact gun, he could have messed up the clearances between the pinion gear and the ring gear, which will howl like a banshee after a while. Actually it is the change in clearance that causes the noise when the bearing starts to go as well, not really the bearing making the noise you hear. and by the time they start making noise, figure on a ring and pinion gear as well. Once a bad wear pattern is worn in they will never be right again and always make noise. The only good news, if it can be considered good news, is they will run like that for 100,000 miles if its not carrying heavy loads or towing all the time.

Thank you for the informative post. Has 60000 miles changed the diff greas with the right lube forget now it is a pos tracion. No leaking and ck regular. I do tow a boat alot maybe 1600 pds total weight. It makes this noise no matter what cruise power letoff power it is constant and has got worse over the last 2 weeks. Even the wife can here it now. I thought it might even be the new tires but does it jacked up to and its pretty loud under the truck with it going even 30 on the speedo on the jack stands.
