2004 Diesel question

Anyone know why the LLY Diesel is rated so much lower with a manual transmission?

Curious as to where to find the ratings.

I'm sure it's on GM's webpage.

Here is what it says in their literature:

LLY Engine Duramax 6600 Turbo Diesel V8 (With manual transmission 300 HP (223.8 KW) @ 3000 RPM, 520 lb.-ft. (702 N-m) @ 1600 RPM) (With automatic transmission 310 HP (231.2 KW) @ 3000 RPM, 590 lb.-ft. (796.5 N-m) @ 1600 RPM)

I remember reading somewhere that the manual tranny doesn't hold up as well as the Allison. Maybe they kept the detuned version around for the manual so as not to tear it up so fast?

I think that is a misprint. The numbers with the manual transmission is the output of the LB7. I looked at the GMC site and don't see anything like that there. It indicates you can use either the Allison or 6 speed manual. There is no good reason that the transmission would affect the engine output. The transmission might limit the loads but not the engine.

I doubt they sell many manual transmissions anyway. When ordering with the power package including the Allison you get a $1000 discount making the Allison the same price as the manual.

Those people that man the site don't know what they are talking about most of the time anyway. I wrote someone about the camper loading limits posted in the glove box. I got an answer from someone who was Manager in charge of something or other. Basically what she said was to talk to the dealer. When I told her the dealer didn't know and I wanted to know what the engineers say, her answer was that she had no contact with them. Her job title was obviously Manager in charge of keeping customers away from working people.

I went to the dealer and did an order. What I typed in is exactly what it says on the RPO LLY option on the printout. This was Thursday April 7th. There is more about the TQ3 Battery, K47 Air cleaner, and the KO5 Engine block heater. I didn't think that was pertinent to this question.

I am still trying to figure out what the 5M7 option is. It says it a provision for speedometer calibration. The service department says they can calibrate the speedometer with out it. And, the 9L4 Power supply 12 volt. I tried to find that one and come up with nothing.

BTW: I want the manual transmission.

I got my Sierra in December. Perhaps should have waited. Not the LLY has lower emissions too. I still can't imagine that the transmission could have any affect on the engine output but will keep an eye out for it.

The diesels come with a pair of 770 CCA batteries (TQ3), the block heater (KO5) and the K47 air cleaner.

Don't have and don't know that the 5M7 or 9L4 is.

I found this on the 5M7: PROVISIONS FOR SPEEDOMETER CALIBRATION (upfitter option) Provides for speedometer calibrations to be coded into the powertrain control module (PCM), after sale, to accommodate tire size changes used by railroad equipment upfitters (rail wheels). (REQ: LQ4 Engine, MT1 Trans)

And this on the 9L4:

12 VOLT ACCESSORY POWER SUPPLY Provides power supply from the battery w/two separate 30 amp circuits, each w/30 amp mini fuse for positive and ground. Main supply leads have 40amp Maxi fuses. All fuses serviceable. Either direct battery power or operation through ignition system. Hook up wire under glove box. Operational amperage is 21 each, 28 total. Hook up & operational info is furnished (N/A w/ZX3 Suspension) *Lead Time 4 Weeks*

I ordered the Z82 Heavy duty Trailer equipment and UY2 Camper & 5th wheel pigtail.

Came all wired up but I had to buy a fuse to put in the Aux. 1 post power to get 12 volts to the trailer. Installing the brake control was a snap. Just two screws to mount the unit and plugged it in (after I bought the harness).

A couple years ago the truck came with a "glove box harness" that had the fuse attached. Now you have to buy them.

Found this site that says the same thing that you have been saying. I initially thought that meant they were not going to supply manual with the LLY.

I may have found ther answer. Look at the torque rating of the ZF 6 speed.

Good detective work. Then they must program the output in the computer.
