2005 Chevy Silverado

Hi all,

I've been thinking about buying a 2005 Chevy Silverado 4x4. I was wondering if anyone knew what transmissions came with the 4.8 liter and 5.3 liter engines? Also the Z71 trucks come with a 5.3 liter aluminum V8 rated at 310 hp. Any good or bad information on the aluminum V8? Also any other information good or bad about the 2005 Chevy trucks in general is appreciated. I do realize that Chevy went to the rear drum brakes and I don't see that as a negative as my '99 Chevy truck has them and it stops just fine.

Thanks Brian

Only the extended cabs are coming with the 310 hp Any good or bad information on the aluminum V8?

The reason for the change was some issues with premature wear on the rear brakes on the 01 to 03 models

One BIG word of caution, make sure you do not get one with standard

3.42 gears because they suck with those gears that GM uses to try to raise fleet MPG average but it actually lowers it in the real world. I had a loaner with a 5.3 and 3.42 last week and it was a DOG in OD and would downshift frequently around town at part throttle. Get at least 3.73 or higher and you will not be sorry but you will with 3.42?s which most of them come with. The 5.3 HO is a spirited engine and pulls good between 3000 and 5500RPM but was held back buy gearing and lacked the torque to deal with the tall OD on anything but flat ground with little head wind.

I just bought an 05 2WD and I love it. (Old truck 1996 1500 GMC) I did get the iron 5.3 with the 3.73 geared locking diff. and HD suspension (trailering package) and still manage 16-18 MPG with a heavy foot. I like the clean look under the hood as the fan on the front of the motor has been replaced by an electric fan on the rad. It looks like I can change the belt in about 30 seconds.

I like that you can turn the daytime running lights off if you want. Mine also has a pressure sensitive passenger seat that turns on the passerger airbag. I am assuming it works on weight because when my 50lb son sits in it it does not turn on, however it does when I or my 130lb wife sits there.

The truck also came with a harness to hook up a trailer brake (a tidbit that I learned here in the group thanks to a memory jog).

Still havn't made my first payment yet and got a shade under 3K on it. I bought it to drive and will be doing it's first oil change this weekend. mmmmmm maybe some Syntec, and some Z-max......

Have not had the chance to tow anything yet, but I have friends with Dodges and Hondas so I'll tow eventually.

Hope this is some the info you were looking for.

I got a 04, I beleive the passenger air bag switch is 60 pounds or so. Don?t know where/when I heard or read that but 60# jumped into my head when i read post. The 05 has drum brakes in rear? mine has disc, were there problems with these, cause I put roughly 40k on my staock brakes with out any problems, and that was with 33" tires. know that im running 37?s on 20" rims Ive upgraded the brakes to the BEAR Aluma Sport system.
