2005 headlight/daytime lights, etc..

Hello all,

this truck has the auto sensor unit it seems that the daytime running lights are coming on but the radio LED is so dim and the trim knob of the headlights does make it brighter.

I have a GMC Jimmy with the auto sensor for the lights and the radio light is bright.

The auto sensor does not turn on the lights, instrument panel, etc.

I tried the bypass by pushing the dome button like the manual states but no difference.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your help.

Is this the original radio?

Are the DRL's or the Headlights on? If the headlights are on the radio display (its VFD not LED) will dim so as to not glare too much at night.

DRL's are the inner bottom bulbs, low beam headlights are the outer top, high beams are the inner top. Though the Instrument cluster should light with the headlights and the radio should not dim until the headlights are on. They did make some electrical changes for 2005 for the electric fans and changed the way the charging system works to help improve milage a bit. When you turn the headlight switch to off does the radio get brighter? If you cover the light sensor on the middle defrost vent for 30 or so seconds does the relay click (thats when it turns on the lights)?

Last night when I started the truck, the head lights turned on, no instrument panel lights don't remember about the radio. Instrument panel only lights when turned on manually. I will try to cover the sensor and see what happens.

Reading the book I tried to use the dome switch as an override but that doesn't seem to work correctly, .

Sounds like it might be a dealer problem to figure out at this po>

How do you turn on your instrument lights manually? If you turn the adjustment to the dimmest position that will turn them off and they will always be off until you turn the adjustment back up. When it's dark out do they work normally? If you're not sure if your DRLs or your headlights are on look at your tail lights, the tail lights don't come on with the DRLs but they do with the headlamps.

adjustment dimmer on full.. when I start the truck when it is dark out, the clock LED goes dim, no other instrument, panel lights or the lights for the AC,vent etc goes on. I have to turn the knob inside to headlights in order for the to turn on. No parking lights go on again unless I use the switch manually. It baffles me that when the truck is started that the clock radio LED goes dim as if the headlight system is turning on.

The clock display is a VFD not a LED. It is normal for them to go dim when the lights are on because VFD's put out a bit of light so they make glare at night and they started making them dim to about 1/2 brightness a few years ago so thats normal.
