4.3 swap

i own a 1992 S-10 with a 4.3 engine with a 4l60 automatic transmission the engine is equipped with TBI. i would like to replace the engine with an earlier 4.3 with a normal ignition and carburator, so i don`t need the computer anymore ( this thing has given me nightmares ) does someone noes a site or info if this is possible or not, will i be able to keep my transmission or do i need to find an other one ? any help is welcome Thank you Dennes

Is your tranny a 4L60 or 4L60E? If it's the latter, the computer runs it.

If it's the 4L60 (700R4) you can just swap them out no problem. If it's the

4L60e, you'll need to grab an automatic transmission controller as the stock PCM will not operate the tranny without the engine control functions as well. Aftermarket, stand-alone 4L60e controllers are available, which allow you to use the electronic transmission with a carbeurated setup, but they sell to the tune of $700 or so.

how can i find out the difference between a 4L60 or A 4L60E so i know what i

am having,

as you might understand, $ 700.00 for a controller is way to steep

Thanks

Dennes,

Check your throttle linkage. Is there a cable running from the throttle linkage down towards the transmission? If so, 4L60/700R4. If no cable,

4L60e.

4L60 = 700R4 = electrical connector (4 pins, square) on driver's side 4L60E = 12-pin electrical connector, round, passenger's side

GM throttle body injection is one of the most trouble free systems out there. That said when it does go wrong, BillieBobJoe shade tree's garage isn't going to be able to fix it. Can you convert the engine you have to carb, and standard electronic ignition, yes. don't forget to change the gas tank and fuel pump. Prepare to give up 20% of your horsepower, an equal amount of torque, and watch your gas mileage drop like a rock. And if you live somewhere where they stick a sniffer up the tail pipe every year, figure on it not passing the emissions test. Whitelightning

the problem is that i like to loose all the electrical wiring, there is a problem somewhere i cant pinpoint. the engine vibrates a lot during acceleration, it did just that as well when cruising with no load on the engine. i swapped the trottlebody and that helped for the cruising stuff, but it still vibrates under acceleration. i replaced the egr valve, and the egr selonloid as well with no luck. the funny part is that it somethimes drive like new with no problems at all but 98 % of the time it runs crappy and trowing me a 32 code. so i figured i might as well swap engines ( i didnt realise the milage would drop like that) and add some more power modifications as well ( i bought headers allready and like to add a serious street cam. by the way, i did a vacuum check; no problems the only thing i could think of is the fuel pump but don`t know how to check pressure on my application. the other thing is that if i start the engine when cold it would fire and die after one second, then after cranking for about 10 seconds the engine would come alife again. but when the engine is warm there are no starting problems. help !!!!!!!!!!!!! Sounds like bad plugs or wires. Wifes 94 is waiting for another new set of wires. Lifted the hood the other night and saw LOT's of crossfiring and leakage, from a NEW set of Accel wires. Trying a new set from Bosch next.

As to swapping to a carb. Plan on replacing the engine, front wiring harness, fuel pump. Plan on failing inspection (if you have them) since it will not meet the correct standards for the engine. Why not just track down the problems and repair it. Probably much cheaper and better in the end.

How do all the plugs look? Might be arcing a wire somewhere.

troubleshooting stuff on that page. Most likely the passage to the egris clogged with soot and needs to be cleaned.

Adding a serious street cam is only going to make any vibration worse.

application.

That's not the problem.

Covered many times here on this group. Your fuel relay is bad. The computer sends it a short pulse when you turn the key on to pressurize the fuel system. When the relay fails, you only have power to the fuel pump through the oil pressure switch, which is why you have to build up oil pressure for your engine to start and stay running. Keep the TBI system. A carb is a major step back.
