4.8L or 5.3L on a 2006 Crew Cab 4wd Silverado

I have had three silverado's with the 5.3L and think it is a great engine, the only problem is I really have never pushed it to its limits, nor have I been close. I tow once in a while, maybe 2000 Pounds at most.

I am now shopping for a 2006 Silverado and think I might look at a

4.8L. With the way they have moved the models around, it seems that a base LS with a 4.8L is bout 2-3K less than a LT1 with 5.3L.

Will i regret this? I just use the truck for running around town?

I run around in a '87 Chevy Pickup. 4.3L V6. Were talking 155 hp. here! Anyway doesn't bother me a bit.

I suspect that 4.8 is way over 200 hp.

THe 4.8 is a good engine and if you get it with at least 3.73 gears you will be happy with it and get better overall MPG too. If you get it with

4.10 you will still get great MPG and be able to tow 5 or 6000 lbs without much fuss if the need arises.

Greetings,

If you are looking at crew cabs then I suggest you get the 5.3L motor for the extra weight. Rear axle ratio will also make a big difference, but it is my opinion that the heavier truck needs the larger displacement for the increase in torque.

I have two friends with the 4.8 setup though I am not sure of the rear end. One of these fellows bought it stock off the lot and he tells me he gets better gas milage pulling his boat with it than mommas Yukon with nothing attached.

Is it safe to say the the 4.8L with 3.73 rear would give me the same gas pedal action as a 5.3 with 3.42, unless I am pulling something heavy!

Get the 5.3 with the 373's. That's what I got and I love them. Mileage is about 16 in town and 20 on the road for my 04 CC.

No, the 4.8 with 3.73 would run circles around the 5.3 with 3.42 and beat it at the pump too. I have driven new loaner trucks with 5.3 and

3.42 and found them very disappointing in power and MPG. If you drive in town a lot the 4.8 is a better deal because it will use less fuel in traffic especially idling a lot.

That's exactly what I get with the 4.8/4.10/5speed/1 size larger tires/standard cab/long bed - loaded or unloaded.
