700R4 stuck in park.

I have a 90 chevy pickup w/a 700R4 that is stuck in park. I have had this happen before and it is not the linkage it is in the tranny its self. I took it to a shop the first time it happened and they told me it that the little paw? that selects the gears went past park and was hung. They charged me $200 to fix it and I was wondering if you seen this before and what is the fix to the problem w/o me spending another $200? for labor again?.

Drop the pan(very messy if you don't have a drain plug in the pan) and you will see a roller on a flat spring...there is something not right if it is dropping past the detents...pull it towards the ground and try to move the detent plate and get the roller set back into the first slot. Try adjusting the shift rod to avoid this in the future.

Thanks Shades, I got up this mornining and it went into gear, but the parking paw was hung and clicking, but the clicking went away (broke, don't know?). It won't even go into park now which is a good thing until I try adjusting the shift rod as you said.

Automatic transmissions, like most mechanical devices, do not like loose pieces floating around their innards. Imagine a piece of metal jamming rotating parts at 70 mph. If your lucky you'll only death by flat spot the tires. If you mount a video camera, you might make some money from the video of the tranny grenading like the bottom out of a top fueler that came unglued. Course if the roads are little slick when it happens it will be a hell of a ride.

Dave, There is a big arse nut inside that holds it all togeather. Likely it wasn't tightened good when the original repair was made, and now it's worked itself loose.

any whooo...... you should take a gander before the whole thing fubars the linkage on the inside.

If it's the loose nut scenario, a pan drop and wrench will do the trick.
