'86 GMC steering column needs grease?

I've got an '86 GMC with tilt-steering. A few days ago the steering wheel started to intermittedly groan a bit while driving. It wasn't like a high-pitched sqeak, so I don't think it has anything to do with the power-steering. Everything on the column works, and it still drives fine. It just sounds like something right around or behind the steering wheel needs some grease.

I've never done this proceedure, so I thought I'd ask for any advice or pointers before I pull the steering wheel and take a look. Is there some bearing or gear in there that has a tendency to wear out, or that needs to be lubed periodically? It's an old truck, so I wouldn't be surprised if something needs to be changed out or maintained better.

Thanks in advance.

yes. their are ball bearings in upper column. i have had fair luck pulling column down to bearings and spraying lithium grease into bearings w/out removing them....hint: lay a towel in the floorboard first....kjun
