88 Sub Air Cleaner Thermostat

Anyone know what temp the air cleaner thermostat goes full open? All the FSM says is it should be full closed at 40F. Even on a warm 85F day it's full closed at startup. At operating temp it looks about 1/2 open. Is this normal? Engine isn't pinging that I can tell. We haven't had a blistering hot day yet for an extreme test. I don't want to wait until I'm 1000mi from home mid-summer to find I should have replaced it.

This is the wax bead thermostat, not the vacuum motor style.

Sounds like it's shot. At full operating temp it should be WIDE open, even on a really cold day.

mine crapped out a loooong time ago... sounded like my 350 was sucking through a straw... I removed the spring and tack welded the choke stove hole closed. I have minimal probs w/ cold starts even at -15F as long as I let it run for a minute or two before I take off.

I yanked my OE air cleaner housing altogether and dumped an Edelbrock open-air (purdy chrome, he he he) element in there. Starts fine even in the coldest of Ohio winter mornings, sounds meaner than hell when you romp it, and netted me a small fuel efficiency increase.

I've been considering that, but saving for the move precludes it... I just put in a high volume/ high pressure oil pump in Big Red this morning.... no more 5 psi hot idles! It really made me smile when I pulled out and the mech. gauge read 70 Psi (cold). now I've got a 15 psi hot idle (at 450-500rpm) and 30+ by 1000rpm with a nice linear progression upwards after.

another project I've been considering is to either a. find a dual snorkel TBI intake off of an F body or modify my existing aircleaner into a dual. I plan on modding the front edge of the hood for cold air... considering NACA ducts. who knows if I'll ever get around to it.

Where are you moving to Bret?

Are you moving any closer to Charles?

If you, Doc and Charles are pretty close, since I'm on a forced sabbatical. I'd like to come out that way to visit Charles, maybe if Doc would like. Meet him too!

back to Appalachia... 90miles south of Lexington, KY. I'm guessing about 4 or 5 hours from Doc.

relatively, KY is closer to PA then Maine is.

forced sabaticals tend to suck... my current employer has offered me $3 on the hour, 7 days more vacation and a company truck to stay, but they're about a month too late... really looking forward to being back in the south... these -15F winters tend to suck when you work outside.. (I don't remember winters this cold when I was growing up here)

cool, but elky's never were my thing. :-) My tastes go in 3 directions... 4x4 trucks, hot small block powered muscle cars (like a '67 Z28 w/ the 302), and small tossable sports cars (like my '87 MR2). I hate driving things that handle like crap. (my k2500 is borderline for me sometimes.)
