92 Suburban Hard 1st to 2nd Shift

1992 Suburban. 215K miles. Tranny fluid/filter last changed about 105K ago. The trans shifts late and hard from 1st to 2nd only when cold. Within 2 to 3 minutes of driving (say 3 or 4 first to 2nd shifts) it shifts fine. This has been occurring for a week and a half. All other gears are without incident and smooth. Fluid level is fine and color and smell seems ok but I'm no expert. I am going to drop pan and change fluid and filter but didn't know what else to check or have checked. Am I barking up the wrong tree? Do I just need to take it in and have the codes pulled? Also, a few articles I've read have suggested while the pan is off, and the vehicle is supported, start the engine and pour a few quarts of dexron through the tranny to flush out the fluid in the top end. That's a new one to me. Any dangers associated with that advice? Thanks for help....

Hell, you don't need to be a trans guru like the G-man to answer a few of these issues....................

1) 105K ago is about 75K too late. 2) Never, ever start the motor with the pan off! It's the equivalent of starting your motor with no oil in it. 3) Dumping ATF in thru the tube will just dunp right out onto the floor and never even make it into the internals. 4) 92 Burb doesn't have an electronic tranny, hence no tranny codes will be in the ECM.
