A/C issue with 2000 Chevy Silverado

I have a 2000 Chevy Silverado (V6) that I've been having some minor A/C problems with. After driving about 45 minutes to an hour, the fan on my A/C seems to blow slightly slower air and not quite as cool. If I simply roll the windows down and shut the A/C off for 5-10 minutes, I can get regular fan speed/cooling from the A/C again. I also notice quite a bit of water drainage (condensation?) on the ground after my truck has been parked for awhile. My father-in-law seems to think that the system may be creating ice, and that is what is causing the problem. He recommended that I take it into a service center and have them check the pressure on both ends (high/low) of the A/C system.

Also, this problem isn't consistent - it only happens occasionally... usually when driving in hot weather (i.e. Texas).

Does this sound more like it could be a refrigerant/pressure issue, or a compressor problem?

Hi!

I'm not for absolutely sure what causes this, but my dad's 1994 Chevy pickup (also with 4.3 V6) using R-134a in the air conditioning system, did the same thing when faced with very hot and humid weather in Missouri. The system would seem to freeze up and the air flow from the vents would slow down, so we'd turn it off and all would be well for a while once again.

Sometimes it can be a symptom of an undercharged system. However, that trip was made a few years back and the A/C still works like new. The system has never been serviced in any way.

Yep, your getting freeze up due to the humidity in the air. Could be a symptom of an undercharged system OR just normal because of the humidity levels. Used to have this problem a lot with the Caravans I drove for work. Got used to setting the system to max cool recirculating air and turning the temp control up just enough to let some heat in to dry out the system.

How often have you replaced your GM Cabin Filter (CF-104 equiv)

for a flow of outside fresh air 'from the dash blower'.?

WIX or FRAM filter about $20... Difficult job to replace..
