Ac Constant Clicking

I have a 1995 C1500 and the AC in it works great cold and blows real strong. Mostly since the last owner had it completely redone (about 8 months ago) right before he sold it to me. But the problem is that it has a very annoying constant clicking sound but what is really odd is during a turn the clicking will become softer same speed but not as loud. If it is a sharp turn it will even stop completely. Any help?

I can tell you why it stops at hard turns...It has a p/s pressure sensor, on hard turns the computer shuts of the compressor. It could be a little low on freon, that would cause it to cycle alot, but hell, if its good and cold no biggy.

he talked about clicks and quits with a hard turn on the wheel, I assumed (possibly incorrectly :)clutch kicking in and out. He's probably long gone anyway, doesnt really matter..........

Try this, go under the hood and locate the lines running off the AC compressor. Trace the lines till you find the electrical sensor. Unplug the connector and take er out for a ride and see if the noise stops.

OBJECTIVE:

BE SURE IT"S THE AC that's makeing the noise. Sounds like the system is cycling on and off constantly. Unplugging the sensor will verify it's associated with the AC, and quickly eliminate a couple dozen other possiblilites for the noise.

"I F" it's the system cycling on and off, yer gonna want to have the preasures checked to see if the head pres. is too high or the system has a low charge.

A low charge is definately possible on a newly repaired system, and left to hip-shot diagnosis, that would be my first GUESS with what you've posted so far.

hopefully helpfull, Marsh ~:~

sounds like it's border-line undercharged

pressure switch is cycling it on and off rapidly, evap pressure is way down, making it blow 'great cold'

try this: open the hood and watch the AC clutch and see if the noise co-incides with the operation of the clutch

Justin,

It does sound like your air con is a little low on freon ( or has a sensor which thinks it's low anyway ). That clicking on and off is a safety feature for your air compressor.

Generally if you are low on freon you have a leak and that means that the oil which lubricates your AC pump may have leaked out also. The safety feature cycles your pump on and off so as not to fry the bearings in the pump.

With no oil the pump could cease which could actually cause your motor to stall. ( I know a guy that thought his motor was garbage because those wonderful serpentine belts do such a good job of holding, a ceased air compressor actually stopped a motor from running )

As for the clicking going away, that part has me stumped. Only thing I can suggest is enter the truck in a NASCAR race..... Turn LEFT Go FAST (and while you are turning you won't hear the click )

Have a good one, hope you get it figured out.

I have to disagree here

The low-pressure switch on the accumulator is cycling the compressor, because the pressure in the evaporator (and accumulator) is dropping below the point at which the evaporator will be below 32 degrees F.

This is to prevent freeze-up of the evaporator.

Ok after thinking about it for a while I just now stupidly realized that it couldn't be the compressor turning on and off due to the sound being far too fast. Since the speed of the sound increases when I turn the AC on a higher setting I thought that there was something in the fan. But after inspecting it and finding nothing I still had the sound. So after following the great advice Marsh gave me I unplugged the pressure sensor and let it run for a while and the sound magically stopped. I then plugged the sensor back in and the clicking was gone. I felt really good about myself for a while until the first hard turn and it came back but disappeared after straightening out. And that is the problem now my original problem has completely reversed itself. I am truly baffled.

With the wiggling back and forth, I would start looking for something loose, like the compressor mount or a tension pulley. Also look at belts. I hads one on an Econoline that part of the rubber on the outside split loose. It wasn't obvious at rest but when the engine was running it slapped against the engine box.

Clicks faster as you turn up the AC? (really should'a ought'a put that in the OP)

anywhoo..... I'm still not sold on the fact that it's the AC that's causing the noise.

........ A FEW QUESTIONS ..if i may

Are you sure...??? Positve...???

100% sold on the fact..??? completely eliminated ANY POSSIBILITY???

that there's not something inside the blower motor housing that's rolling around as the truck pitch's from side to side on turns?

or....the blower motor isn't bolted up tight... maybe loose??

also.... have you tried running the system in the VENT or HEATER modes to see if the noise is still there?

also.....

If the truck is running in PARK, and you turn the steering wheel from side to side to the stop.....can you here the noise???

................... do this........

Make a 2-wire jumper wire long enough to reach from the AC Preasure Sensor harness connector to inside the truck.

(the cord off yer wifes vacume would work nicely)

Take yer "Uncle Henry" out yer pocket and skin the wires back on both ends.

Shove one set of the ends of the wires in the harness terminals good enough to be sure yer makeing a good connection.

Touch the other set of ends togeather just good enough to make a connection and chunk the wire in the passenger window and on the seat.

Drive the truck.....

take a couple of sharp turns....

when the noise starts...

unhook the wires and see if the clicking stops.

............. We don't want to go spending yer hard earned money on charging an AC system that isn't gonna fix yer complaint....we'de rather you buy us a beer with the money....after we narrow it down to a loose Wheel Well Sheild. (that you bumped with yer knee while unhooking the AC sensor)

........ (story time) (FWD vehical)

Got a call one morning from a customer that had picked up their vehical late the previous day. Seems on the way home SHE.....heard a mighty THUMP...and then bump, bump, bump as she rolled on down the hiway. The customer is a little irate bout the quality of the work SHE.....recieved....and demanded some satisfaction.

Towed the vehical in..... Test drove it....

bump,bump,bump....at wheel speed.

Put the vehical on the hoist....

D A M N.....!!!!!!!!!!

that shure is a big racoon wrapped around that axle.

August 1986

Went up on the river bluff at Louisiana, MO to do some work on the radio station transmitter there

Got back down, got on highway, vibration city

Stopped van, looked underneath, the driveshaft was wrapped with the long grass that we'd driven thru

took 15 minutes with an Xcelite K-22 to clean it all off................

racoon, or racoon parts ?

July 1990

coming home from Hannibal MO on bright moonlit night, saw a huge groundhog sitting in the road

I kept thinking 'he'll move', sure enough, when I was about 150 ft away (at

75 mph) he moved to the 'full upright on hind legs' stance

WHAM.......looked in mirror, GH parts flying

a couple days later started smelling something really rank

looked underneath, GH parts packed between the crossmember and pan on the old Dodge B-150
