Brake Booster 1996 1500 Suburban

Guys,

My brake pedal is now operating slowly (like in slow motion and I have to prepare to stop at least 300 ft in advance.

I hear a hissing from under my floor area dash board below at the pedal.

The pads are all fine and fluid topped off.

  1. Do I need a booster? Can someone confirm?

  1. How do i tell if it is hydraulic or vacuum?

  2. How complicated is that to replace?

I am thinking just a few bolts to pop it out.

Do I need to take unhook the master cylinder from the brake lines?

I would hate to have to bleed the damn thing.

Can I just pop off the master cylinder, pop out the booster and replace? Is there enough room to do that without having to unhook the brake lines from the master cylinder and bleed?

Well i looked at the booster itself... and it is large/round... so I am guessing it is vacuum... like this one on ebay.

if you are just changing the brakebooster, dont unhook any brake lines. the master cylinder will obviously have to be unbolted from the booster, and the booster is held in place by 4 nuts under the dash and one clip that is attached to the brake pedal. and DONT YOU DARE buy a used brake booster!!!

That's your bad engine Vacuum leaking booster.

Sure sounds like it.

It's more then likely Vacuum. it would be a large round chamber behind the master with the 1 way check valve plugged in that goes to the Engine. On a Hydraulic Booster, there would be Power Steering lines going into it. It's small. Usually a Diesel will have one of those, but not always. Some of them will have a Vacuum pump on the front of the motor to power a Vacuum booster.

Generally not that hard. It all depends if you have access to everything easy/hard, and the tools to do it and maybe make it easier.

Pull the nuts off for the master, and pull it forward and off and just move it out of the way carefully as to not bend the lines all up. No need to remove those. Pull off the Vacuum connection. Then get under the dash and disconnect the brake peddle linkage, and the 4 nuts holding the booster to the firewall. Sometimes those can be hard to get to. Once they are removed, pull the booster out. Watch out for the push rod that may fall out where the master was connected.

YES. Also don't try to save a few bucks and buy some used junk you have no Idea where it's been. Don't be a cheap A$$ when it comes to brakes. Your life and everyone around you could end up paying for it. Get a good Rebuilt from the parts store. Not some garbage pulled from the junk yard. Double check your work before you go out on a test drive.

If there's *anything* potentially confusing, take plenty of digital photos as you're taking things apart. They'll provide you with a reference work in case you suddenly can't remember what position something was in.

It's really not that complicated.

Pictures are a good Idea for some things, but really, it's just a booster. If you really need pictures to do a booster, maybe you shouldn't do the job yourself. Really, there's not much to it. Not like he has to tear out half the engine compartment to get it out. A couple nuts on the master and pull the Vacuum connection off on the outside, and 4 nuts on the inside and the linkage on the brake peddle. That's pretty much it. Reverse what you did and your done. The hardest part might be your BACK when your half laying on it on the driver side pulling the nuts and stuff off. Not to bad on a truck as you have more room to work and you won't be under there for so long.
