cost of a factory rebuilt blazer transmission

what should a goodwrench factory rebuilt automatic transmission w/overdrive cost for a $WD 1996 chevy S-10 blazer?

the garage wants $2800 which includes the markup.

is there a web site where i can get prices?

thanks,

"Mike Levy" sez:

Good advice. A completely rebuilt Suburban tranny (4L60E) with higher quality seals and hardened parts cost me $2000 total. I went with a highly regarded local family shop that does GM "all the time", not any of the national chains as I was warned away from all of them.

Good wrenchin' to ya, VLJ

=========================== I dont know, I think I might go for a GM CERTA unit. I believe the warranty is still 3yrs/36k on them too. I dont think you can get better than a 12/12 at a tranny shop but I could be wrong....I think you are garanteed to get all the updates that way too.?

You may be gauranteed to get all the updates GM did to the tranny, but I don't think they ever changed the sun shell to a 1-piece unit, I think they're still multi-part units in there. I could be wrong. At least with a reputable shop you can get the unit built as you want it, with a shift kit if you want, maybe a different stall speed in the converter, get the valvebody bore repaired, the beefed-up sunshell (aftermarket part), and get an external tranny cooler installed to help with tranny life.

This isn't saying the cooler is NEEDED, my tranny is 115,000 miles old and stil 0-mile strong, no slipping that I can tell. Key to long life from a transmission is regular service...

the sun shell is and always has been 'one-piece'

==================================== That is great that you got a good deal on a healthy tranny but.....This guy has to know for sure that the guy is doing the rebuild like you discribe. It sounds like he doesnt know anyone that does trannies or he wouldnt be asking us here...you know? Thats why I said I would go with a GM CERTA. At least you get a good warranty and most likely it is done right.

I paid about $2200 for a complete rebuild of the tranny in my 97 Olds Bravada (blazer w/ AWD).

AAMCO still offers the lifetime warranty on their full rebuilds. It doesn't cost that much more than their 3 year/36,000 mile warranty does. Of course your vehicle has to look like it is a street driver not a car crusher.

I think I would chose AAMCO over GM. A neighbors daily driver is a 1965 Bonneville w/421 engine, and TH400 (rebuilt by AAMCO several times). This was his grandfathers car, and still looks showroom fresh, of course the family owning a Paint, Body, and Upholstery shop has more than a little to do with the good looks. I used to own a 68 Mustang that had an AAMCO rebuilt trans in it. I tortured it, and it never broke.

=========================== Is it common for that good of a warranty at an independant? If he can find a shop like that it would be a good deal if the price is decent.

I don't know how 'common' it is............but:

I started giving it as a sales tool, to counter GM's 3yr-50k, back in 98 (guess that'll be 6 years next week)

a lot of my customers drive a 70-mile round trip commute daily, so they eat up the 60 k in just about 3 years

I found that it's not 'rocket science' to build one to last that long........pay attention to detail, don't skimp on parts, use a rebuilt converter EVERY time, and flush the cooler with a power flusher (put an auxiliary cooler on EVERY teuck and SUV)

I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of in-warranty failures I've had in around 5-600 units

my prices are higher than the '3 month / 3000 miles' crowd, but then I don't get every bargain-seeker in here looking for 'el-cheapo' prices, either

Better to have a reputation as good instead of cheap. Those bargain seekers are generally never happy no matter what you do. Bob
