Dist cap

96 Silverado 5.0 died on the way to work. It would crank fine and almost wanted to start. Felt like a fuel pump issue and this truck has done this before. Had it towed to the shop. Shop called later that day and said it was the dist cap and rotor. It had the orig cap and rotor and 125k on the clock. Question.....can the dist cap and rotor just make it die suddenly? Mike

You bet! If the carbon post in the cap wears off, which it probably did at

125K, that breaks the circuit to the rotor which effectively cuts off the spark from all of the cylinders. Because it is high voltage, it might have arced enough to fire intermittently, but not well enough to keep it running.
