Emergency Break Repair Update

Below I posted that my truck needed emergency-break repair work done because of failed inspection. Well the dealer called me now and said it also needs one rotor turned and new pads on the back because they are at the low indicator total bill is $555,,,, dang!!!!!!! Wasn't quite expecting that.

Anyway the dealer also told me Left front wheel-barring is gone. Cost over 500 for that too. Does that sound about right? Should I do that right away or wait?

Thanks

500 to replace the bearing ? Your the only one that's being taken for a ride here.

Call around and get prices. I'm sure you can find someone a lot cheaper.

My mother had both front brake pads replaced, Turned and repacked. Oil change and filter for under 200.00 at a local TirePro center. Along with the lifetime paperwork.

The bearing, Lets say its 30-40 bucks. Anything more then 50.00 -75.00 to replace it, Is crazy. The labor rate in this area of Calif. is 70.00 an hour.

$500 for the bearing could be about right. If he's talking about the '99 and newer 2WD Chevy, they don't have regular wheel bearings anymore, at least not that I can tell. The hubs are sealed units and have to be replaced as a unit.

I wont jump too hard because we all make mistakes, but do a little research before you start typing about a vehicle you haven't worked on. The truck in question uses a sealed hub bearing. The walmart of auto parts, AutoZone, lists a Timken assembly at $345 for the part., so the bearing price is in line. How ever the rear barks are too high. A quality rotor from some place like NAPA will run $70, the brake pads around $60, and labor about 1.5 hours. So the price is about $200 too high.
