Anyhows I am open to suggestions on well known suppliers or even a low mile motor someone knows about I'm not real fond of rebuilders one thing is they want a core charge and like a box of chocalates you never know what your gonna get. thought I would rebuild my own [use too] but i'm gettin to danm old and i need the vehicle . thanks for any help al

I would be leary of third party "goodwrench" engines. I priced a tranny with my local dealer last week, and if he wasnt pulling my chain, I was pleasently surprised. According to him goodwrench engines and trannies now carry the 5 year 100,000 mile warranty.

The tranny was a 700R4 w/torque converter, the price was $1800 dollars. I didn't ask about core charge. The dealership is Autoway Chevrolet in Clearwater Florida, they have a regional warehouse for GM dealers on the west coast of Florida. I don't know if they ship.

Did you think the goodwrench engine was brand new? They are remans also you know.

Actually the 5.7 is new, and the 6.2 diesel is new, the 4.3 V-6 is available new or reman, and the 7.4 is available new or reman.

I don't know how one goes abot finding a good rebuilder, but if I were looking to find a deal on an engine I would go directly to a rebuilder in my region that has a good reputation. My dad and I used to buy rebuilts years ago from Road Runner Rebuilders in Phoenix, and we never had any problems with their engines. Most of the vehicles we put them in were sold after many many miles with little or no problem to folks who got many more miles out of them. Then when we got in the autoparts business we would rebuild our own and just send out the machine work.

Its not that hard to rebuild an engine by the way. Its hooking up and testing all the crap that goes on an engine these days that puts it beyond a lot of folks.

Nowadays running a service business I have found its cheapest when I look at the big picture to just buy new vehicles and let the dealer fix anything that comes up under warranty. When they go out of warranty trade them in on new again.

I have bought a Jasper reman and a Goodwrench new. Always go with a Goodwrench engine. The Jasper toasted a valve in short order because it was reground, not replaced. I was in a place where that was the only motor I could get. The Goodwrench motor is still going strong 240,000 miles later, the Jasper will be replaced at 70,000.

if you don't mind paying a little more,

formatting link
and you get a

3 yr, 75,000 mile warranty. You can find a preferred installer on their website.

Jaspers use all new valves in ALL their reman engines. I've been to the plant and have no reason to doubt this. I rekon you (or the installer) mis adjusted it. In any event, it would be covered by their warranty.
