GMC /Chevy's 's 2.2L Does GM get this engine from Japan or ?

I've heard it's a Susuki, a Geo... and an Isuzu ???

Geesh! I sure would appreciate the straight scoop... and a web page or something that I read more about this!

Thanks folks!!

For sure Geo is owned by GMC. It seems I remember hearing the 2.2L were Mexican made, though that might be something else I was thinking about.

It's not a Japanese engine, it's a good old American engine. Sure, a lot of domestically designed engines are built elsewhere (Mexico), but they are still a domestically designed engine.

Ok Ian!

Do you know any place on the web where I can go that tells of this engine's development?

Thanks

I'm sorry, I don't. It's hard to imagine anyone caring enough about the development of this engine to warrant putting up a web site for it. It's just their econobox 4 cyl pushrod engine.

Ian,

Please understand that I am NOT excited about this engine for its technology or whatever... I just WANT to know as much about it for when it breaks.. any extra knowledge might save me a buck or two down the road.

I didn't expect a FULL web site devoted to it, but I did think there might be a chance where one could find some articles about it... perhaps someone has written about some quirks that it has. Heck.. I don't know! That's why I'm making such a post in here to find out.

I think Ian's insight is probably pretty close to true though. Your best bet is to dig around the various S-series BBS (s-series.org, s-seriesforum.com).

Chris... your point and Ian's are duly noted... and I do understand where you're both coming from. I'm sorry if my reply sounded terse! :(

I did find the s-seriesforum.com, so I'll check them out!

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

Chris has good suggestions as to where to look. I don't think that engine was real common in the S-trucks, at least we see very few of them at the dealership level.

Quirks? About the only real problems they have had was some issues with noisy pistons on cold start, and head gasket failures. The head gasket failures are very common on that engine. We do plenty of them on the FWD version in the J-body cars. Same basic engine with a few modifications to fit into a truck.

Yes... he did me good! :)

And let me say publicly here, Ian... that I'm sorry if I looked like I was yelling back at ya' Ian w/ some of the raised CAPS! I got to lookin' at what I wrote and how I said it... and I could have expressed it better than that!

I haven't been thinking nearly as clearly these past 4 weeks since we got hit broadside... so please excuse me for not coming across like I intended!

OK... that's the kinda stuff I was sorta' looking for, Ian.

OK... well by golly, that's a whole lot more than I knew about this l'il ol' 4 banger than a few minutes ago!

Thank you very much!

Don't worry about it, I had a look at my reply to you and realized that it sounded rather "cold"...which wasn't my intent.

I haven't been thinking clearly since I decided to quit coffee cold turkey. Man.....I never realized what a powerful drug coffee is....(grin).

Good, glad we could help.

That engine is actually very common around here... when I bought my

2000 Sonoma, there were 4 other S-trucks on the lot (Rebbec's in ElPaso, IL) and they all had the 2.2L engine, as does the one I bought. I also have two friends with this engine in both of their S-10's. I've actually only seen one or two of the 4.3L powered versions around.

Yes, mine does make a different noise on cold startup... you can't hear it untill you're under acceleration, and it goes away after about

15 seconds. It's barely noticeable, though.

The 2.2's in the Cavaliers seem to have headgasket issues, although I've never seen one in an S-truck fail... hope mine doesn't. It's been a good little motor for the hell I put it through (morning paper delivery route, 88 mile round trip everyday, constant stop and go driving). Bought it with 42,000 miles. It's got 48,000 on the clock so far without any issues yet.

Just out of curiosity, I would like to know what kind of mileage people are getting out of their 2.2's? Mine gets about 22-23 mpg running the route and about 27 on the interstate. Mine has the automatic transmission.
