GMC Truck

I have a 1983 GMC truck that has been parked for about a year outdoors. There was nothing wrong with it when it was initially parked, but it has not been started up for the year it was parked. My question is what are some of the things I should do before attempting to start it other than obviously charging the battery. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well first thing is check all the fluids. I would take out the plugs and squirt a little ATF in the cylinders and crank it over with out the plugs. That will get a little lube on the cylinder walls and get the oil pump pushing oil through the motor. And if at all possible I would get that nasty old gas out or add some gas dryer to it.

1) Drain the gas tank and refill. 2) Buy an oil pump priming tool. 3) Yank the distributor and use the priming tool (with electric or air drill) to prime the oiling system. 4) Hand crank the motor AFTER priming the system. The best way is to run the priming tool, then turn the crank 1/4 turn, then prime some more, and so forth. 5) Drink beer. 6) Fire her up!
