harsh shifting '89 S10

Can anyone explain what controls the shift points in the OD transmission of my 4.3L '89 s10? The shifting has become very harsh and at elevated rpm since I replaced a blown head gasket. I freely admit to possibly misconnecting something ... but what would cause the shift points to change dramatically like this?

Finally, can anyone suggest a better shop manual to use with this truck than the Chilton's I have?

Thanks,

Peyton

Loading thread data ...

did you re-connect the throttle cable to the transmission ?

is the bracket holding the upper end in the proper position ?

when disconnected, the little plastic doo-bee-joob that attaches to the throttle body arm should be about 3/8" 'shy' of hooking up............in other words you need to pull the inner cable TOWARD the TB about 3/8 to hook it up

It wasn't disconnected

Aha! You hit the nail squarely on the head! Under the bottom nut on the stud rather than over. Enough to cause problems.

I adjusted this as per the Chilton manual ... causing the harsh shifts. Am now experimenting with the adjustment to find the shift point I like.

Thanks for your help
