How do you repair stone chips on clear coat?

Can you fill in stone chips with multiple layers of the touch up paint and lightly sand them flat like normal paint? Or is there any other method that works? I did this and started with 600 grit so far and the chips are mostly gone but the clear coat looks like it will take alot of work with progressivly finer sandpaper and polishing to bring it back. I am beginning to wonder if there is an easier or better way! Did I goof up or am I on the right track? Thanks, Ray Please send any good ideas to my e-mail as well as posting!
