is a tune-up necessary?

I have a 2000 Blazer, 46,000 miles. She runs great, I get regular oil changes, other fluid changes, check tire pressure, check belts (just had the serpentine changed).

I'm looking for anything else to get better gas mileage. She's never had a "tune-up". Is this necessary? and what is it other than spark plugs and checking the timing? and will this help gas mileage?

Greetings,

Try these items as well, if not for the mileage then for the overall health of your truck and motor:

Fuel filter Air filter PCV valve Keep your tires properly inflated, balanced and rotated Rear differential fluid Tranny fluid and filter Crankcase breather filter (if it has one)

You're still early in it's life, but new plugs and wires can't hurt if you're seeing a drop off in performance.

With today's high energy ignition systems and fuel controls spark plugs last longer so it's unlikely they need changed. What you should change is the air filter especially if you drive in any dusty conditions. checking the PCV valve is a good Idea but I doubt it needs replaced, Changing fluids like the transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and differential fluid every 30,000 or so is an excellent way to extend the life of your vehicle and prevent problems it won't affect gas mileage. Tire pressure as mentioned will have a slight affect on gas mileage so make sure to keep tires up at the upper rage of they will hold. I dissagree with changing the transmission filter I think just a drain and refill is good unless the filter is somehow cloged or something; I forgot GM does not provide a drin plug or at least they haven't in the past still the person doing the change should be able to see if you need a new filter or not.

I should clarify that when I say change the Transmission and power fluid I really mean replenish them by getting what you can out and replacing that amount on a regular basis like every 30,000 miles. I use a handsoap type pump to get power steering fluid out you can use a meat baster to. Good luck Jay

I wouldn't get a tune up or anything done until a problem creeps up. It's better to be reactive than proactive where automobiles are concerned.

I have an '01, S10 LS Ext Cab, auto trans. It has 55,000. I just got the transmission, coolant and brake systems flushed. At first it seemed to drive better, but now, about 500 miles later is seems to drive worse. Anyway, IAW the book, these systems should be good for another 50K miles. I get the oil changed every 3,000 miles and tires rotated every other oil change.

That's great advice! I make way better money replacing a transmission than I can by doing a trans service. Coolant flush? Biggest waste of money there ever was.... better to wait until the frost plugs, water pump, heater core, radiator, etc. etc. etc. are all in need of service. Tune up? Nah, better to wait until you've got a dead cylinder.... then you either get to tow it in or risk melting your catalytic converter. Fuel filter? Why waste money changing that when you can just wait until it's plugged and then replace the fuel pump at the same time?

Your advice is good and I hope lots of people heed it. I can always use some extra money. Bob
