My tensioner went bad within a week of the alternator crapping out on me (alt first). If you have a friend around, you can lift up on the tensioner and release the pressure on the belt. Spin the pulley and see how it feels -- should be smooth and easy moving. When mine died, the bearings basically seized up, and the pulley stopped turning. This resulted in me needing a new belt (which was replace the previous week with the alternator). My truck is an 88 S-10 with the 4.3L V-6.

you didn't say how many miles are on the truck, but the tensioner might be the problem. There might also be an idler (fixed position) on the engine. These parts are usually only found at the dealer, but replace them both along with the belt..if it wasn't changed with the alt.

If this problem started with the new alternator or compressor, they might have a bad bearing....don't assume a rebuilt compressor or alt won't have a bad bearing.....get a mechanics stethoscope or a long screwdriver and feel for the noise....those idlers aren't cheap to replace for nothing.
