Recirc. door actuator replacement.

The recirculation door actuator is bad on my '93 C2500 2WD Chevy pickup. This thing is buried up under the heater plenum. No access to the top retaining screw whatsoever. I've got the full factory service manual books, but this actuator replacement is not covered, just the other two actuators. Mode and defrost, I believe. This one is not mentioned anywhere in the manual, but is in the wiring diagrams. Has anybody done this job? I'd like to get around taking the entire plenum assy. out of the truck to get to it, if possible. Actuator is definitely bad. Pops for 10 seconds as per the time delay when it runs full travel. Door is spring loaded and it's falling back against a jackscrew in the actuator due to a bad retainer. Tired of listening to it every time I start or shut off the truck. Thanks for any help.

Might want to go to a wrecking yard and find a similar vehicle where they have the dash torn apart. Then you can see how you can get to it and maybe come up with some ideas.

I had a car where the factory manual said to remove the steering wheel and entire dash to get to something. But by looking at the same car at a wrecking yard (with dash pulled), I could see where the screws were. Then was barely able to get to all the screws in my car without removing the dash. (Took 1/2 hour to remove/replace 3 screws.)

Just take the bottom screw out and use a flat screw driver to pry the motor outward and break the top ear off, get a new one or replacement and break the top ear off of it to match the one you took out. There is no sideways pressure on the motor, it will run like that for ever. I have been running like that on a 1995 2500HD for more than three years and no trouble, just be sure to put the bottom screw back in snug. Sam

Outstanding. There had to be a way around dismantling that entire HVAC assy. Will get it done tomorrow. Looks like rain anyhow. Thanks, Sam.

My manual had that same procedure of pulling the steering wheel, and dropping the inst. panel to get to some hardware to remove the HVAC plenum. I'm going to try Sam's procedure below, but maybe put some good epoxy where the top broken screw mount will be just for insurance. Thanks, Bill.
