Reset Engine Oil-Life System

I have a 2006 Chevy Silverado. I am about to change the oil and filter. How do I go about reseting the Engine Oil-Life System once I am complete? The manual does not cover how. Is it possibly by scrolling on the DIC until you get to the Engine Oil - Life display and then pushing in on the reset rod on the dash by the speedometer? (the same button used for resetting trip milage?)

Thank you, H. Seldon

Some trucks you can do it like that with the dic, or you can push the gas pedal 4 times within 5 seconds with the ignition on and it will reset.

On page 3-51 of your owners manual it indicates that the return key resets certain features (if you have the controls on the steering wheel). This will reset the Change oil indicator. Moving over to 3-54 it tells you a little more about the oil change indicator. On this page it also direct you to page

5-24 which will describe to you how to reset the message using the ignition and gas pedal. Last, it also tells you about clearing messages using the "enter" button..

The direct answer to your question: (from the owners manual)

How to Reset the Engine Oil Life System

The Engine Oil Life System calculates when to change your engine oil and filter based on vehicle use. Anytime your oil is changed, reset the system so it can calculate when the next oil change is required. If a situation occurs where you change your oil prior to a CHANGE ENGINE OIL message being turned on, reset the system.

To reset the Engine Oil Life System, do the following:

  1. Turn the ignition key to RUN with the engine off. 2. Fully press and release the accelerator pedal three times within five seconds. If the OIL LIFE RESET message flashes for 10 seconds, the system is resetting. 3. Turn the key to LOCK. If the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message comes back on when you start your vehicle, the engine oil life system has not reset. Repeat the procedure. If it still does not reset, see your dealer for service.

It tells you in the Owner Manual how to exactly do it! It's simple. Turn the Key to the run position (Without Starting) and then step on the Gas Peddle FULLY 3 times within 5 seconds. It's the quickest. If you have the buttons on your Steering wheel, you can reset it there also. It's pretty simple to figure out. You want it to say Oil Life at 100% when it's reset. If you have the Buttons, you can see this, if not, then you should just see a Oil life Index Reset message Pop up if you did the Gas thing correctly.

The Trip/Mileage button has nothing to do with resetting the Oil life index.
