rubber thingy hanging below bumper

On my 87 Chevy 1/2 ton there is a rubber thing (like an air foil?) bolted to the front bumper (under it -hangs down maybe 6 inches or so). I had the truck painted and the body guy says to trash it... it's ugly and doesn't do a thing.

I'll bet to buy it would cost $100. Does it do anything... direct the air from the front end or what?

And if what I'm thinking is what the OP is talking about (I didn't see it), then you can buy those here:

Let me answer it in this form: I own a 1985 Chevy K5 I own a 1990 GMC Jimmy I own a 1988 Chevy S10 with a spoiler from a 1985 Chevy K5 and a 1990 GMC Jimmy in the bed. Makes the leaf springs & tow hooks up front look bad a$$

The rubber thingy hanging below bumper is supposed to save gas by deflecting the oncoming air completely under the truck. This is done so that the air does not encounter as much resistance by blowing against all of the various cavities under the truck.

It's called an Air Dam, and your paint guy is an idiot. I think they look good. Trucks without them look ugly, as you can see part of the frame, suspension, etc.
