S-10 tailgate capacity

Hello group

I have a 97 S-10 that I bought used. I do not have the owner's manual. I may need to help a friend move a side by side refrigerator and am wondering if the tailgate will support it. I just recently replaced the strap assemblies; the original ones rusted thru and broke (luckily NOT while I was standing on it).

Will this tailgate support 250 lbs?

Thanks

Yep, Or it would be a real pain using ramps to load 600 pound (and up) 4 wheelers, snowmobiles, motorcycles, lawn tractors.

The real question is, can it move that much? ~small truck prejudiced~

This was asked over on alt.auto.4x4.chevy-trucks a few months ago IIRC. My response then was: I weight 265-275lbs at any given time. I've had myself, plus 75lbs worth of tools/tool box on the tail gate many times and have had no problems or concerns. Mine is an 88 S-10. The general consensus on the previous thread was basically the same as my experience.

The tailgate will definitely handle it and the truck will move that much and more. My '88 S-10, 4-cyl., auto, hauled 1700 lbs. of slag without a problem. Only had to go about 10 miles and this truck has an extra leaf in the springs, but there was no problems driving with this load. Did this not once but twice. Still have this truck, by the way, with 155,000 miles and going strong. One of my kids use it now. My '98 S-10 with a 2.2 4-cyl. and 5-speed hauled 36 concrete Dek-blocks, which weigh approx, 45 lbs. each, which equals 1620 lbs. total, again with no problem. Also about a 10 mile drive from the Home Depot to my house. This one has a standard suspension so the back end was a little low (only a little) but ran and drove just fine. These are the heaviest things I've hauled, and I wouldn't recommend doing this very often. But I've hauled enough in these trucks that I'm confident of what they can do. Denny

if it's the original GM tailgate, it should have absolutely no problem holding up 250 lbs. I bent the aftermarket piece of crap tailgate on my '88 K2500 when I stepped on it (I go about 275lbs) with a full 55 gal drum of water (440lbs) already on it. I've had this load (715lbs) on my dad's '90 C2500's tailgate many times with zero probs.

147miles going strong (relatively) My 88' S10 2.5L 5speed has hauled 1120lbs of paving stones, and say 400-500lbs of people at the same time. hauled 3tons (or whatever) of toyota rav4 down the road - while it tried to go the other way My ass I've burned tires in first I've burned tires starting in second gear - and just barely got away :-) I've chirped second, butchered my intake and exhaust to make it go I've added aftermarket, made aftermarket... Power slid around corners and kept up with BMers
