Self destructing 4.2 inline six

There is a recall out on a limited number of

4.2 engine in 2002. The cylinder sleeves break and cause all sorts of havoc. We got one in the other day and I took some pictures.

This picture shows the broken piece of the sleeve lying on top of the cylinder block It should be down inside that cylinder. Note all the chunks of upper piston land lying around and in the other cylinders.

Closer picture of the "busted up" piston. Depth perception is a bit hard in this photo, but if you look closely, you can see that the upper part of the piston is gone.

Where the "upper" ring managed to get to.

Different angle shot of the broken sleeve piece.

Nice shiny new engine going into the vehicle today. That old engine had 100K kilometeres on it before it broke.

I wish they would stop trying new stuff and just perfect the old. Notice that every motor GM ever made that was worth a damn is no longer being produced?? That inline six (back in the day) was nearly indestructable. I saw someone empty the crankcase and put a brick on the accelerator (just like in the movies) and it ran itself for about 30 minutes and OUT OF GAS!!! Then he drained the water and finally got it to grenade. (ahh what we used to do in college for fun) If they had re-engineered that motor it would probably out perform a stock 350. If anyone cares it was in a 1970something 4 door Chevy Nova that had some wicked frame/body rot due to the NY salt covered roads.

They made a helluva Model T. Would you prefer to still be driving one of them?
