Sound of Allison tranny when hot . . .

Just wondering what the whine sound is on the Allison tranny when the temp reaches around 230 deg. It happens in 3rd and 4th and goes away in OD. The sound goes away once the temp drops back below 220 or 230 deg. It also seems to cool down and run closer to 200 degrees after the warm-up. Prior to this warm-up it generally runs between 200 and 210 deg.

My Dad's and mine both do this and always have. Pondered this again after towing through the Smokey Mountains this past week w/ outside temps in the upper 90's! YUCK!!! Must be that global warming thing that happens every 12 months or so!!! :-)

You do not want to be pulling a Ally (or any tranny at 230 anyway. The sound is likley from fluid thinning out and maybe aerating too. Get temps dow through reduced power or down shifts. Realistically you want to be below 210 and at 220 and above it time to statr throttle back or downshifting. BTW, the reason it likely happens in lower gears is because converter may be unlocking and that makes more heat too. ALso the clutch fan may not be working well at lower speeds and higher RPM resulting in lower airflow through tranny cooler while in OD speeds are generally high enough for cooling.

that's the sound of power.......

as to the temp.....your OK, when the temp gits to 250 the computer takes actions to eliminate slipping to cool the unit down.....you'll notice the difference in the shift.....or lact thereof anywhoo.

here...have fun..........

250 is slow to moderate death for a automatic tranny

I was thinking along the lines of additional pumping going on or something along the lines. The shifts are firm up there as one would figure them to be to cut heat. Considering the temp gauge doesn't red line until about 260 deg., I figured the temp was not much of an issue. It drops right back down after the long climbs to 200 - 210 deg. Two of these in our family are up over 100K miles, but mine is just getting broken in at 50K miles for an '02!
