This engine was originally mounted in which Chevy?

Hi,

Thanks a lot if someone can provide some help in identifying which Chevy model this V8 Chevy engine originally mopunted in.

Motor number : 0012524T56FA

Roughly it tells me that it has serial no 0012524 and it was built at the Tonawanda Plant in 1956.....

Can somebody better identify this engine and tell us which car it was originally made for?

Thanks a lot for help on this issue

I'll have access to the block casting number tonight. Will post back later.

According to the url you posted in the other reply, does this mean that I can newer know for sure which Chevy chassis / car model this engine originally was mounted in?

Being a 56 it cannot be in that many vehicles anyway. Does it have provisions for an oil filter? The early 1956 265 blocks didn't until very late production. As for being sure EXACTLY which vehicle it came it. That will be kind of difficult.

I don't know of any way to tell exactly which or chassis/model it came from. If it has a casting number that's unique to one product line , maybe. But odds are no.

Hi again,

We tried to search all over the motor but did not find any casting number. Where is the casting number supposed to be located?

I saw the location of the Casting Date from the url you provided, but I would be grateful to know more in detail where I can expect to find the Csting Number on the engine mentioned in the original post

Thanks anyway

Casting number should be cast into the block at the rear bellhousing flange. Probably 3720991 if its a 56 block with a 265 bore

3731548 if you have a late 56 early 57 283

If the motor is in a vehicle and you are having trouble reading it from the bell housing flange, press a piece of clay across the numbers. Then when you remove the clay you can read the numbers in a mirror...

Hi all,

Thanks for all the suggestions. The number we found was: GM 3720 881

Would this be an engine originally mounted in a '56 Bel Air, or is it impossible to say which car model...?

I need to buy the two exhaust manifolds for this engine, and also the exhaust tubes / silencers, the front bumper parts, and some other body parts for a '56 Bel Air.

Do you have any suggestions to shops and places where I can find such parts (new or used)?

Thanks again for your willingness to help

best regards

It could be from a '56 Bel Air...195 or 225HP. Or it could be from a truck of the same year. No way to really say. Given the number of 195HP cars made vs the others, odds are it's the 195HP car model. As for parts, given the restoration interest in these years, I'm sure they're available. Unfortunately, I'm not up on that particluar aspect.

Geir, the number you read on the flywheel flange is most likely

3720991. The 9s look like 8s. This is the block number for 265 cubic inch motors used in passenger cars and truck in 1956-57. This block has provision for an oil filter on the driver side rear. Same block for all 265 applications of the V-8, that year.

I have a block that I pulled out of a '56 210, in 1984. It has over

250,00 miles on it, and it was still capable of running when I pulled it.

If you pull the camshaft out, the rear cam bearing should have a small slot in it. this slot meters oil to the lifter galleries by connecting the two holes in the rear cam bearing.
