valve seals

Hi All, The valve seals on a small block look like "O" rings that go around the valve stem. Do they go in a grove on the stem below the keeper groove or do they ride down on the valve stem near the head? I should know the answer to this but somewhere along the way I forgot! Thanks Rick

all they really do is keep oil from running down the stem 'in mass quantities'

When my Dad showed me how to rebuild my first engine (the venerable 283), he told me to put the Ford cup type seals on as well as the o-rings. Worked real well.

Ditto on the cup seals; I've been doing that for 25+ years with no problems. I usually used Ford seals but also found that some GM engines (Cadillac I think) also used them.

Okay, okay, I'll use ford seals, but what sizw engine seals do I use? I can't believe that a 390, or 460 has the same diameter valves as a 289 or 351. What ford engine do I get the seals for to work on a chevy small block? Rifck

289/302 will work dandy 11/32" dia. valve stems as a SBC. Respectfully submitted,
