99 Blazer 2WD, 4.3 90K miles, have water in tranny :( Is there a common issue with radiators on these? Mike

No, but there is a common problem with the intake gaskets leaking, but I cant see that being your problem. But who knows!

Your transmission "cooler" is IN the radiator. Sometimes when there is a failure the coolant will enter the transmission though the cooler lines. If it is still driving, you might be able to attach a line to the output cooler line and run it into a big barrel. Then dump new, clean dextron III in the filler tube as you run it. Keep doing it until it doesn't come out pink. What kills the transmission is once it gets over 212* and the water boils, then it dissolves the adhesive that holds on the clutches. So if it hasn't gotten too hot, you might be able to save it! Also, install the largest after-market transmission cooler you can fit & afford, bypassing the OEM radiator "cooler". Don't believe any stories you hear about slipping transmissions from not being heated up by the engine, your transmission heats up MUCH faster than your coolant does, and the colder your transmission THE BETTER.

I know the trans is cooled by radiator. I am sure the leak is very small and was caught in time. There were only droplets in the trans pan when I dropped it. The trans was/is driving normally. I am having the radiator replaced and the trans completely flushed today. The old lady is scared to death of aftermarket anything and it is her vehicle. So, the cooler is out despite the shop owner's recommendation to put one in also. Oh well. Thx for the reply. Mike

You'll just have the same failure. And depending on the flush system type, you could even destroy the new radiator and cause it to happen again! There REALLY is no reason that GM shouldn't have done a separate cooler, and there are very few shops that wouldn't recommend an independent one. This is one that I would really try to convince her on! We have a guy here who owns "no bull transmissions". He offers a rock-solid warranty better than GM does, and he wouldn't touch a tranny if they didn't let him put in an after market transmission cooler (or two!)

I live in northern Ontario. My local NAPA sells rebuilt transmissions with an aftermarket cooler. They explained carefully -- no cooler, no warantee.

Allot of aftermarket coolers go inline with the OEM cooler, and they (cooler makers) don't have the stones to say to make it the sole cooler. They say "only if the radiator has been severely damages and repair isn't an option". Putting it in series is just dumb, might just as well not do it....

Mike, you can reassure your lady by explaining that you can purchase a factory upgrade at the dealer for $xxx (I was looking at getting one for my next truck purchase) OR you can buy the aftermarket one for a little less.
