Will a cold air intake really improve gas mileage?

I've been told that a cold air intake would improve gas mileage on my '00

5.3 Silverado by a couple miles per gallon and that a dual exhaust flowmaster would help too. I'm kind of skeptical, is this true?

Follow the stock air intake from your throttle body to where it ends. It's already a cold air intake. Most people fail to realize their stock system is already sucking in cold air. Does that make any sense?

A performance exhaust system will net you a few ponies and maybe a few MPG; a full system including headers will be your best investment per way of horsepower/MPG per $$ spent.

I agree about the intake. If you want a cool looking air intake system with a 'hi performance' filter, then spend the money. As for the exhaust, headers are a big DO IT! Dual pipes on the other hand...I put on a custom bent single exhaust in place of my duals and got better seat-of-the-pants performance and more MPG. Its a debatable subject, duals vs. single, so do your homework!

Guys, I've been wondering...does installing headers affect warranty? I'd love to put a pair of Thorley's on my '04, but don't want to void anything.

You'd have to call your dealership or a 1-800 GM info line to ask that question, and get the answer in writing if it's yes. Seeing as how the headers are involved after the combustion process I don't see how they could possibly void the warranty.............

Thorley's are ssswwweeeeettttttt headers man! Their ceramic-coated tri-y's are awesome lookin'!

Hi, Yes it's true. Fuel delivery is at it's best when cold. On a lot of racing vehicles they run an "ice box" that is a can with a gas line thats coiled in it. The colder the air/fuel charge the more power it's going to make. This in turn gives you better gas mileage. Another thing you way want to look into is water injection. Edelbrock makes an electronic water injection system that works very well. I squirts water into your intake which atomizes the fuel better and cools & cleans your engine. When we were at war with the Germans they used water injection in their planes and were able to out climb our planes. I ran one on a

1075cc turbocharged Kawasaki. I got the bike up to 155mph before I got the > I've been told that a cold air intake would improve gas mileage on my '00

It has been years and years, well actually decades & decades, since I ran an "ice box" on my `72 GTO that I ran at DelMarVa. Another old school trick was to wrap the intake in ice wrapped up in a towel prior to your run. In all these years no one has come up with a better technology answer to the problem of cooling down the fuel supply & intake? Been a long time since I've made a run to or down the track.

I'm not too sure ice boxes are still legal where I race (1/4 miler)

Doesn't the 5.3 already draw air from outside the engine compartment? (cold air) My 6.0 draws though the fender. I would be skeptical of any mileage claims. If the IAT sensor senses colder air it will add more fuel.

Just a small thing, but on the WWII aircraft it was water/methanol injection and both sides used it. You had to have the methanol for high altitudes to keep it from freezing, but it also added some power. It was called ADI, (anti-detonation injection), and it still used today on all of the old DC-6 freighters with the P&W 2800 radials. Used to work on the system years ago, and on a ground max. power run, when you hit the ADI switches she would just flat start rocking in the chocks and really want to go flying. Pegged out the torque indicators.

Oh I know they are legal, as is icing down your intake manifold. I just figured that in three decades someone would have come up with a new & improved technology. Fairly old-school trick.

If you car is dripping any fluid in the stagging area you will be turned around where I race...

I have seen a more moderne kit thats avaible i either saw it in jegs or summit ,this kit actually is for plumbing your intake to pump CO2 through it to cool down the intake I've also seen them with some sort of setup to cool the fuel down but there is a chance of an icing condition then that you have to watch for ,hope this helps
